11th Annual 500 Race Tent Party
by Matthew Socey May 21, 2008

The Slippery Noodle Inn, 372 S. Meridian St.
May 22-25, 9 p.m., 21+

The Noodle is one of the hot spots in Indianapolis during any race weekend. Thousands of people from all over the world will flock downtown. This weekend will be the 11th annual pitching of a tent, multiple stages and lots of solid blues music.

Thursday, May 22

Biscuit & The Mix: Biscuit Miller made a name for himself playing bass for Lonnie Brooks and Anthony Gomes. His album Come Together is a mixture of blues, funk and R&B that keeps fans dancing all night long. His live show will do the same.

W.T. Feaster: Bandleader Travis Feaster’s main influence as a performer is Junior Wells, so it’s not all about guitar wankering. W.T. Feaster can take any cover and make it his own (but don’t yell out requests because he already has some picked out).

Friday, May 23

Gordon Bonham Blues Band: Prior to becoming one of Indy’s finest, Gordon Bonham did time in the Chicago and Austin blues scene. It shows in his music. Tom Harold’s harmonica will be on the prowl.

Gene Deer Blues Band: Gene Deer can rock out with the best of them, but his roots and soul are in the blues.

Blonde Sonja: This rockin’ blues septet features multiple vocalists and a buffet of songs to fit the occasion. The band’s Web site (blondesonja.com) lists too-many-to-count songs in the band’s arsenal.

Also: W.T. Feaster

Saturday May 24

Danny Seraphine & CTA (California Transit Authority): The Noodle has been known to book a well-known non-blues act on race weekend. Danny Seraphine & CTA follow in the tradition of past acts 10,000 Maniacs and Mark Farner (former Grand Funk Railroad man). Seraphine was the drummer of Chicago from 1967-’90. After Seraphine and Chicago parted ways, he moved to Colorado and began his own production company and record label.

Also: Biscuit & The Mix, Gordon Bonham Blues Band, Blonde Sonja

Sunday May 25
Gene Deer with Special Guest Kenny Brack: Deer will bring on stage special guest and race car driver Kenny Brack, who won the 500 in 1999 and is a musician in his own right.

Governor Davis and The Blues Ambassadors: Besides calling his band The Blues Ambassadors, Governor Davis is a blues ambassador himself. Guitarist Steve Robbins has been known to whip out his mandolin when needed.
