Napier on fashion: Why is it that everybody in the rockabilly scene dresses like Arthur Fonzarelli or any character from John Waters’ Crybaby? Nobody dresses like Opie Cunningham, Potsie or Ralph “The Mouth.” How about a gang dressed like the Four Freshmen?

Napier on music: There’s nothing I would change, however, about rockabilly music. The energy and greasiness of the genre spawned both Led Zeppelin and Black Flag. It was outlaw music: made by outlaws for outlaws.

The rockabilly show of note this week will be this Friday at Sam’s Saloon on Prospect Street in Fountain Square. On the bill is The Legendary Art Adams and Cincinnati hot shots Rumble Club.

Art Adams, Indianapolis resident and Rockabilly Hall of Fame member, is the genuine article. He’s been around since the ’50s, when he released a couple singles that became regional hits, “Rock Crazy Baby” and “Dancin’ Doll.” Since then, the singer has tried to get out of the music business, to live a regular life outside of juke joints and dive bars, but fans and promoters in the U.S. and Europe just won’t let him go.

Now in his early 70s, Adams still plays with the fervor and intensity of dudes a third his age. On Friday, he’ll commandeer a band that includes hot-shot stand-up bassist Mike Strauss; a couple of guitar players, Tim Gibson and Bill Stewart; and Indianapolis drum guru Mark Cutsinger.
