Books

Of the thousands of people who went to the Penrod Arts Fair this year, how many do you think know where the name “Penrod” came from? Did you know that the guy who wrote Ben Hur was from here? Brookville, to be exact — Lew Wallace. Or that the guy who gave us Ralphie, of The Christmas Story, grew up in Hammond? Or that Gene Stratton Porter was a woman?

If you’re not up on Hoosier authors, then make sure you stop by Indiana Authors Bookstore at 36 E. Maryland, opening this weekend. This locally-focused bookstore, located right across the street from Conseco Fieldhouse, hopes to balance the city’s athletic passion with a literary awareness.

The store is intended to become a center of thought, a place where Hoosier voices can be heard. The Indiana Authors Bookstore will stock hardcovers and periodicals, field guides and cookbooks, anything by anyone who lives in or cares about Indiana.

Also in the works: a Walk of Fame in the sidewalk downtown, featuring the names and book titles of Indiana authors. Penrod Schofield, 12-year-old protagonist of the 1914 Booth Tarkington novel bearing his name, would be proud.

If you’re interested in learning more about Indiana authors, or if you happen to be an Indiana author, send an e-mail to info@newcenturypublishing.org. They’re actively fielding inquiries and always looking for new stories to publish.
