Comedy on the Northside

Comedy Review | What you missed
With comedy clubs in downtown, Broad Ripple and the Southside, Indianapolis isn"t short on places to laugh. That didn"t stop the Funny Bone from throwing its stake down amongst the car dealerships and chain restaurants around 96th Street and Keystone Avenue. The club opened this past weekend with a fund-raiser for the Humane Society of Hamilton County. Did you know many pets in Hamilton County do not even have rhinestone collars? Indy"s own King of MCs, Hank McGill, kicked the evening into gear. Coming off a six-month hiatus, Hank has got his funny back. Nerdy-right-down-to-his-cardigan Jason Dixon was next, making jokes for people who aren"t afraid to think. "Have your friends explain it to you," Dixon suggested more than once. What do you expect from a guy who makes math jokes? Good stuff. Dwight Slade - loose-jointed, loud, hails from Oregon - took Dixon"s cerebral setup and ran with it. Or rather, ran away from it. Slade made silly faces, fell down repeatedly and was enthusiastically received. All night, waitresses were carrying around trays of complimentary shots; the cognitive leap is yours to make. Slade, a childhood friend of Bill Hicks, takes the all-too-common comic script, "I"m bitter, so if you"ve done anything successfully or have nicer stuff than me, then go to hell," and makes it his own by acting like a 12-year-old between refills of his Ritalin prescription. The Funny Bone itself, like much else on the far-Northside, is sparkling clean, well-designed and pretty sterile. Every seat has a good view of the stage, which can"t be said for all the local comedy clubs, and there"s the obligatory brick wall backdrop. But the Funny Bone is in a stripmall and it feels like it. Who says you can"t laugh in a stripmall, though? Especially when the service is good and the comics are funny. Oh, and there"s lots of parking. Upcoming acts include the diva Sommore, fresh off the Queens of Comedy tour, Nov. 26-27; Saturday Night Live cast member Darrel Hammond, Nov. 29-30; and former BET Comic View host Rickey Smiley, Dec. 17-18. The Funny Bone is located at 3625 E. 96th St., just east of Keystone Avenue. For more information, or for tickets, call 844-0300.
