Packed together on the statue"s steps, protesters listened to a range of speakers and performers - from religious leaders to local musicians to combat veterans. The crowd was comprised of an equally broad range of people - from teens to college students to people with young families to senior citizens.
One man held up a pro-peace snow shovel. Others clutched cups of coffee that warmed one hand while they waved yellow "no war" flags with the other. Despite bitter cold and icy conditions, nearly 700 people crowded Monument Circle on this Saturday afternoon, offering their voices and visibility against looming violence in Iraq. Organizer Harold Donle considered the turnout "fantastic" in light of the nasty weather conditions. "When I got home I had a load of e-mails from people apologizing because they couldn"t make it because they were snowed in," said Donle, a Vietnam War veteran. "If the weather had cooperated, we would have three or four times that number."
