This Saturday will see the eighth annual Bob Marley Tribute Concert, the signature yearly event of the West Indian Association of Indiana, held this year at the Gene B. Glick Junior Achievement Center.

Providing the main entertainment for the fourth year in a row will be Chicago-based Grammy-winning reggae band Gizzae, featuring several members who have played with Marley’s son Ziggy.

“They are very, very clean-sounding reggae,” Beache says. “You can tell these guys know their stuff. When they do a Marley remake, you’d swear it was the original Wailers band playing. They’re really very good at what they do.”

Ken Beache, event manager and board member of the WIAI, says he expects attendance to top the show’s record of 375, thanks to support from the Glick Center.

“The new venue has really given new blood to the members,” he says. “The previous venues we’ve worked with have never really represented us very well, but the Glick Center has been fantastic. Bob Marley is probably one of our single greatest assets throughout the world, and so we put the event on to showcase West India.”

In addition to Gizzae, local DJs Puma and Yardtag Crew will spin before and in between Gizzae’s sets.

“One thing the people of the West Indian community really appreciate is that the ‘No problem, mon!’ attitude really is there,” Beache says. “If we’d have problems at our functions, you’d have heard of it! The music is great; it’s soothing, it’s uniting. It’s really great to see how the music unites the community. Anybody who appreciated social commentary can appreciate the importance of reggae and where it came from. It speaks to many of the things the community lives with.”
