Discopolis
by Jack Shepler Apr 2, 2008

Well hey there; welcome to Discopolis. That’s disc-ope-oh-lis, thank you. Not disc-opolis — this isn’t Monopoly. Anyway, my job here is to tell you about the state of the dance, the meeting places of the electro heads, the sweetest dance floors and maybe even a few secrets about the local electronic music scene if you’re lucky.

I figure the proper way to start you out is with an introduction to the venues that bring the funk, and the funky people for that matter. From electronic-only clubs to gay bars and jazzy joints to flirt spots, Indy has it all.

Keeping Fridays Switched and Sundays Deep

Every week, the internationally recognized Musique Boutique offers up deep Midwest-style beats at “Switched” Fridays at Gelo (5252 E. 82nd St.) and “Keepin’ It Deep Sundays” at Lulu’s Restaurant & Cocktails (8487 Union Chapel Road). The evenings usually feature a local favorite or multitalented national headliner, plus residents like John Larner, Tyler Stewart and Slater Hogan.

This Friday you can catch Let’s Play House Recording’s DJ StarSteady. Sunday, April 27, Musique is putting together a live performance (not DJ set) by Brazilian house producers Jamanta Crew. Plus, in early May, the Boutique will host French-Canadian DJ Fred Everything, which is guaranteed to be a good time.

Get your gay on

Many argue that without a doubt, the biggest gay club in town also happens to be one of, if not the, best overall venues in town: Talbott Street Nightclub (2145 N. Talbott St.). Every Saturday the club features one of their illustrious residents or a world-class circuit DJ.

This month, Talbott will feature DJ Deanne’s monthly “Ascension” along with live percussionist Joe Meltdown (you’ve got to check him out!) April 5; DJ Logan Matthew April 12; San Francisco’s Phil B April 19; and local DJ hottie extraordinaire Jared Curry April 26.

If you don’t feel like dancing and/or drag is your thang, step on over to the show room and get your dollar bills out.

Therapy on a dance floor

Hidden under the soon-to-be-removed overpass at Market and College is a gem of a dance club called Therapy Nightclub & Lounge (605 E. Market St.). With its big dance floor and chic/cozy lounge, the club offers the most diverse lineup of electronic events in Indy.

This month, you can catch a night featuring old school harder electronic beats, “Get Your Hard On,” April 12, featuring a classic techno tag-set by Adam Jay and Gizzmo, ’90s hard house set by Brandon Kaye and old school trance set by James B.

That’s not to be confused with the “Hard On” event April 17, when House of Babylon will present FuQ with gay poster-DJ Scotty Thomson from NYC. You can also hear drum & bass from time to time at Therapy, such as IQ Entertainment’s “Fix(d) Wednesday” April 23, with San Francisco’s Juju, Danny Byrd from the U.K. and Indy’s dubstep goddess DJ Shiva. Every week, Soulful Sundays features spoken word, and the club also brings in hip-hop most Fridays.

Welcome to the Koncrete Jungle

Speaking of drum & bass, every Tuesday night the Melody Inn (3826 N. Illinois St.) hosts the Indianapolis version of the longest-running jungle/drum & bass night in the world: Konkrete Jungle. It features local DJs dropping drum & bass, breakbeats, hip-hop, dubstep, techno and ragga, with a chill atmosphere. The jungle will host an Earth Day benefit April 22.

B-Town gets down too!

Any time you hear about a dance party in Bloomington, you’re bound to hear the names Flufftronix, Action Jackson or Pumpkin Patch. These multigenred disc jockeys put on events in B-Town often, and are hosting the series “Rad 5” April 8-12, planned around the infamous Little 500. The all-ages shows take place at five different venues. The much-hyped Flosstradamus, who turned many heads at Lollapalooza last summer, will play the Buskirk-Chumley Theater (114 E. Kirkwood Ave.) April 9 at 8 p.m. More information at www.rad5.info.

Miss Bullwinkles? A former promoter of the closed-since-2006 gay club will put on his first event since the shuttering at a new venue, Rachel’s Café (300 E. Third St., Bloomington), just around the corner from the old Bullwinkles. The April 19 no-cover benefit to kick start the new space will feature house DJs all night long, including promoter Colin B, Indy’s Brandon Kaye, Detroit’s Dan Evans, Bloomington’s Ashley Ross and more.

Jack Shepler is also known as DJ Jackola. Jackola will DJ at the FuQ event April 17 at Therapy Nightclub as well as at Rachel’s Café in Bloomington April 19.
