Ballet Theatre of Indianapolis was founded in 2008 by former Ballet Internationale dancers “to re-establish professional ballet in greater Indianapolis,” according to Oleg Gorboulev and Oybek Tashpulatov, BTI artistic directors.

“Our vision is to contribute to the local arts and cultural scene by showcasing a diverse repertoire, focusing on beloved classics as well as innovative work,” says Mara Vinson, the third BTI founder, a dancer on maternity leave.

“We know there are a lot of schools and semi-professional ballet companies in Indianapolis. We want to bring a fully professional company that is not stuck in one genre of ballet. We know a lot of young choreographers and we want to have their new work. Out of respect for dancers who want to do everything, we will have neo-classical, modern and contemporary work along with classical,” Gorboulev adds.

The 14-member company for the June 28 gala at the Zionsville Performing Arts Center includes soloists and principals from Pacific Northwest Ballet, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Orlando Ballet, Cincinnati Ballet and Nashville Ballet, whose credits include extensive national and international affiliations on stage and screen. Local dancers who have trained at and danced with most of the Indianapolis-based schools and companies include Leslie Dodge, Allison Healy, Katie Lupke, Kim Torcivia and Casie Wheeler.

The Gala Performance is June 28 at 7 p.m. The Zionsville Performing Arts Center is located at 1000 Mulberry Lane. Tickets are $25-$35; call 317-475-0021 or log on to www.BalletTheatreOfIndianapolis.org.
