Civic and personal responsibility is primary for Brewers of Indiana Guild, whose members include businesses and individuals who partner with nonprofit organizations to raise funds and promote responsible use of craft brewed beer.

A heartwarming incident of personalized philanthropy comes by way of Indiana native Tim Fogelman, returning to Indianapolis as a managing partner at the Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery at 2801 Lake Circle Drive. Fogelman had been a managing partner with one of the Rock Bottoms in Phoenix, Ariz. When the mother of Fogleman’s daughter died in an automobile accident last year, he suddenly became a single parent. Fogelman’s mother came from Noblesville to help him in Phoenix, but when she had to return home it became essential for Fogelman also to come back to get family support to raise a 7-year-old.

Speaking with NUVO from his new home in Fishers, Fogelman said he approached his regional manager to help him.

“And he said, ‘Let’s talk to the guys in Indianapolis to see who would be willing to move to Phoenix.’ An exchange was arranged and here I am. Robert Wright and I are swapping positions. Of course, it’s not that much of a hardship to exchange Indianapolis for Phoenix, is it?” Fogelman quipped.

“Rock Bottom is beyond the stereotypical corporate structure,” Fogelman says. “It has a family feel. And maybe that’s why it has a sense of obligation to the homeless with a national program called Miracles. In Indianapolis, both Rock Bottoms cooperate to support a downtown homeless shelter.”

Giving back to the community at large was at the heart of Bloomington’s Upland Brewing Company’s 10th anniversary celebration May 29-June 7. Diverse free events included the first annual UpCup Homebrewers Competition. First place went to Ken Smith of Plainfield, Ill., for his Imperial IPA, which will be brewed on Upland’s 20 BBL system by Smith and Upland’s brewers Caleb Staton and Eileen Martin and entered in the 2008 Great American Beer Festival Pro-Am Competition in Denver next October.
