It’ll be a homecoming show for Indy bands Haste the Day and Gwen Stacy when the Vs. tour makes its final stop at the Emerson this Sunday.

Following a self-released album in 2002, Haste the Day has recorded three albums for Solid State Records. Their most recent, 2007’s Pressure the Hinges, impressively cracked the Billboard Top 100 Album chart.

The quintet has earned a worldwide following through their chaotic live sets, and they spent last summer on the road with the Vans Warped Tour.

Gwen Stacy just released The Life I Know, their first album on Ferret Records; this Sunday’s show will serve as their official CD release show. Although a little too cleanly produced for this writer’s tastes, it’s still one of the heaviest and angriest hardcore records to drop in a while. Crunchy guitars and a damn near 1:1 circle pit breakdown to song ratio doesn’t exactly mean Gwen Stacy is breaking any new ground, but they definitely know the territory.

The tour was presciently named “Vs.”: A Feb. 6 stop at Fresno, Calif.’s The Exit turned ugly when over 300 ticketholders were kicked out of the venue because the promoter had oversold the show.

Things turned worse when Scary Kids Scaring Kids took the stage. Those kicked out of the club had stuck around outside, in order to listen and maybe catch a glimpse of the band. But the authorities had different plans, and police ended up shooting pepper-spray at the tenacious spectators.

Scary Kids Scaring Kids ended their set after three songs, and went outside to console the assaulted kids who were stung, swollen and, ironically, scared.

Outside of that isolated incident of pepper-trigger-happy cops, the show has been getting great press in every city it hits; locals should get the best of it, with Gwen Stacy and Haste the Day playing to their hometown.

The tour will stop at Rhino’s in Bloomington on the night before, Feb. 16.
