Ignorance runs rampant
I enjoy reading your columns in NUVO. As a turncoat journalist (I switched sides of the table, but don’t hold that against me) I appreciate the candor of your story (Hoppe, “21st Century Catch-22,” Feb. 27-March 5).
In a larger sense, this forces us to question our basic constitutional rights. In essence reading is a form of communication and free speech, which is protected under the First Amendment. But I’m not writing to get on that bandwagon.
However, I do lament the fact that ignorance runs rampant, even in institutions where freedom of expression and speech should be protected most — in the university. It is there where ideas should be freely exchanged and openly debated. The harassment complaint is a potential crisis the university may or may not have to deal with. Coupled with the blatant disregard for one man’s First Amendment rights, and there’s a nice flash point hot for an explosive public crisis and embarrassment for IUPUI.
