Jazz Notes - 06/25/08
by Chuck Workman Jun 25, 2008

Indy jazz record label Owl Studios has announced it will be the title sponsor of the summer jazz series at Eagle Creek Park. The official title of this year’s festival is The Owl Studios Jazz at the Point presented by the Eagle Creek Park Foundation and WICR-88.7 FM.

“Owl Studios is pleased to be able to support this wonderful opportunity with the Eagle Creek Park Foundation and WICR,” Matthew Altiser, operations director of Owl Studios, said. “There is no better place to hear jazz than in the park next to the water.”

The summer concert series at the Eagle Creek Marina, now entering its third year, was originally started by former smooth jazz radio station WYJZ. The Eagle Creek Park Foundation has upgraded the stage and added a roof for the 2008 season.

“The Eagle Creek Park Foundation is delighted to welcome Owl Studios and WICR as partners in the Jazz at the Point jazz series that will start on July 1,” Jim Weir, Eagle Creek Park foundation director, said. “We look forward to having the folks that have enjoyed it in past seasons come out and enjoy the new artists that will come to us through Owl Studios.”

Owl Studios will present a diverse lineup of jazz sounds from its roster of local and national recording artists.

July 1: The Buselli Wallarab Jazz Orchestra
July 8: Cynthia Layne & Friends
July 15: Frank Glover will debut his new group Kilo
July 22: former Basie Band trumpeter Derrick Gardner & Friends
July 29: Everett Greene
Aug. 5: The Steve Allee Trio
Aug. 12: The Dixon /Rhyne Project

The series will run Tuesdays from 7-8:30 p.m. The Eagle Creek Marina offers parking for both cars and boats. Admission is $5 per vehicle.

Optional dining and non-alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase at each concert from the Jazz Kitchen and the Eagle Creek Park Foundation. Lawn chairs and blankets are welcome. In the event of rain, scheduled makeup dates are Aug. 17 and 26.
