It’s been 30 years since the Vogue opened, and we’d like to hear stories about the time you’ve spent at the venue. Feel free to write on whatever you like, as long as it’s somehow Vogue-related — from that time you smoked crack backstage with George Clinton, to that other time that you projectile vomited towards Crackers a little after you smoked crack with George Clinton.
We want to hear from folks who caught up with post-punk and new wave groups in the Vogue’s first few years, or from those that may have visited for the first time last month to hear The Franchize or The Cleptoz. It doesn’t matter which side of the stage you’ve been on; stories are welcome from both performers and audience members alike. Of course, we don’t write puff pieces about anyone or thing (even ourselves), so feel free to criticize, praise or do a little of both.
The deadline for submissions is March 1, and we’ll be printing some of them before the 30th Anniversary Celebration appearance by X March 18 (a band that’s, incidentally, on their own 31st anniversary tour). Try to keep everything under 250 words, and send it all to vogue30@nuvo.net or c/o Scott Shoger at NUVO’s address.
This week: MCs, poets, pianists
• Are you an aspiring MC? Have you tired of your basement studio? Thursday, Feb. 7 is the day for you and your rhymes to mosey on down to The Living Room Lounge (934 N. Pennsylvania St.) for Nap City Live, an open mic event hosted by Bulletproof Soul. There’s no cover, and things get underway at 9:30 p.m.
• A few weeks back, you might have seen an article about Monika Herzig and Norbert Krapf’s new album Imagine: Indiana in Music and Words, a fine collection of Krapf’s poems about Indiana (and other subjects) set to Herzig’s jazz arrangements. Friday, Feb. 8 is your next best chance to catch the pianist and poet live, in a 7-9 p.m. performance at Boulevard Place Café (4155 Boulevard Place). Five dollars will get you in to see their tribute to Black History Month and Valentine’s Day.
• Just in time for Valentine’s Day, this Sunday’s Retroactiv at the Melody Inn will be sweaty, kinky and naughty as hell. “Tainted Love — A Valentine’s Party” gets underway at 8 p.m. and will feature sets by DJ Nightmare and DJ Daydream. All are welcome, dress code includes everything from street clothes to bondage gear and you can expect the whole gamut of ’80s music, from Divine to the Sisters of Mercy.
