Mandy Marie’s Fourth Annual Cash Bash featuring Bill Kirchen and the Hammer of the Honky-Tonk Gods,
by Jeff Napier Feb 27, 2008

Radio Radio, 1119 E. Prospect St.
Saturday, March 1, 9 p.m., $10 advance, $12 at the door, 21+

The late Johnny Cash, seemingly more than anyone, was all things to all people. He was probably the one artist who, in his day, could draw God-fearing country-dwelling churchgoers, indie-rock hipsters and heavy metal fanatics in equal numbers.

For the fourth year, Indy honky-tonk queen Mandy Marie and her husband Danny Thompson will offer up a night of tribute to Cash.

“Leave Me Baby, Leave Me Be” is the latest offering from Mandy Marie and her Cool Hand Lukes; recorded with Waylon Jennings’ band, Spirit of the Outlaws, it’s already one of the best country songs of the year. In addition to Mandy Marie standards, the band will tackle the Cash tunes “Get Rhythm,” “One Piece at a Time” and “Cocaine Blues.”

The lil’ol’rockabilly band from Fountain Square, Bigger than Elvis, featuring Thompson, Tufty and Mark Cutsinger, never disappoints. The pure joy of watching these boys play is enough to make any gig a house-rocking gut-buster.

Headlining the Bash this year is Bill Kirchen and his Hammer of the Honky Tonk Gods. Since making his name as the guitar wild man in Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, Kirchen has reinvented himself as “The King of Dieselbilly,” and played with such luminaries as Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe.
