Non-smoking bars
by Letter to the Editor Jul 16, 2008
As I was reading through your Nightlife Guide (June 11-18), I was disappointed to read that the Old Point Tavern was awarded the “Best Bar for Smokers.” I think NUVO has tried to define themselves as a progressive, human rights champion publication; but awarding a bar for smoking is far from progressive. There are 27 states and over 2,000 municipalities nationwide that have a comprehensive smoking ordinance that prohibits smoking in all workplaces, including restaurants and bars. There are workers at Old Point Tavern, as well as numerous other bars in Marion County, whose health must be protected. Seventy-six percent of Indianapolis residents do not smoke and prefer to visit nonsmoking establishments. Smoke-free establishments are good for the health AND business. NUVO should continue its progressive stance by jumping on board and awarding restaurants and bars who want to protect the health of their employees and patrons from the dangers of second-hand smoke. Maybe next year when the guide is printed everything will be smoke-free!

Why don't you let the bartenders and servers decide where you / they work? I am sure that there are plenty of smoking bartenders and servers to serve the needs of the smoking establishments in town. You who wish not to be exposed can patronize and work elsewhere.

They are JUST bartenders and servers, who cares! (I hope my sarcasm is noted). Why should some workers be covered and not others? Many must work in the industry and don't have other options, for example they are college students and don't have other options.

If you don't like smoking then don't go to a bar that allows smoking. If you don't like smoking don't work at a bar that allows smoking. Bring a "measly paycheck" home from somewhere else.

Couldn't agree more! The workers in these places must breathe in these poisons and carcinogens only to bring home a measly paycheck. If it were a more respected industry or the source of the pollution not from a cigarette this would have been stopped long ago.
