Actress Zooey Deschanel’s cutesy, unthinkably detailed vocals — framed by M. Ward’s organic arrangements and Phil Spector-friendly production — might be the surprise of 2008, making for an album every bit as good as Jenny Lewis’ similar 2006 doe-eyed-soul album, Rabbit Fur Coat. Ten Deschanel-penned originals, two unpretentious covers and a “hidden track” fill the gut of this adorable, unlikely album.
