As the daughter of violinist/conductor Pinchas Zukerman and flutist/writer Eugenia Zukerman, songwriter Natalia grew up touring with her parents. “I think that the traveling gypsy/wandering minstrel is certainly in my blood,” she says. “I grew up with a roving sense of community — friends of our family were scattered all over the globe. That has definitely prepared me for my life now, but it’s so different from the way they traveled. I don’t think they’ve ever packed up a Honda for a month-long trip, slept on countless couches of generous music fans and friends, loaded up all their own gear every night [and] sold their own records ... It’s a grueling way that no one really prepares you for.”
Zukerman originally trained as a violinist but soon discovered that she could not express herself as well on that instrument. Once she discovered folk music, she turned her attention to the guitar and began writing her own songs in college. Zukerman describes her confessional songs as “diary rock.” Her third CD, Only One, was released earlier this year.
Robin Coleman, owner of Segment of Society Promotions, felt overwhelmed with Zukerman the first time she heard her play. Coleman bought her CD and played it continuously. She was thrilled when Zukerman’s management company contacted her about booking a concert. “I was really excited to be able to book Zukerman because of how impressed I was with her and her rich musical background.”
Hear local favorite Stasia Demos open for Zukerman at the cozy Boulevard Place Café this Friday.
