Three Mo' Tenors
by Rita Kohn Feb 13, 2008

Three and a half stars
Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra;
Feb. 8-10

Tightly choreographed with a full range of vocal pinnacles, from French and Italian operatic arias to Broadway showstoppers to pop songs to gospels, Duane A. Moody, James Berger and Robert Mack delivered a program including production choreography and lightning-quick costume changes. The threesome tours with music supervisor Joseph Joubert and a combo that melded beautifully with the ISO, whose brass section got in some nice licks. Moody, Berger and Mack are of the new generation of classically trained singers who can do it all, and do it splendidly. Act 1 featured the three in an artfully balanced “La donna e mobile” from Rigoletto, a gorgeous “Bring Him Home” from Les Misérables and an audience participation rendition of “Minnie the Moocher.” Act 2 upped the amps with a “My Girl” knockoff — equally fun having just heard The Temptations at Clowes. “Don’t Set Me Free,” “Hit the Road Jack” and “Georgia on My Mind” were a tip of the hat to Ray Charles. Closing with spiritual and gospel medleys and a reprise of “Make Them Hear You” from Ragtime brought the program back to its thought-provoking vein.
