Connie Heermann, the highly regarded teacher who ran afoul of administrators at Perry Meridian High School for teaching the book Freedom Writers Diary has agreed to resign her post rather than go through a hearing before the Perry Township school board. Perry Meridian administrators objected to Heermann’s using the book — a collection of writings by high school students — because of its unvarnished treatment of sex and race. Erin Gruwell, the teacher who compiled the book, said that, to her knowledge, Perry Township is the only school district in the country where a teacher has lost her job for teaching the book.
