German chancellor Angela Merkel is the first world leader to say that enough is enough and decide not to attend the Olympics in Beijing. In the wake of China’s clampdown in Tibet, nagging questions continue about the propriety of staging the Olympics in a country with such a deplorable human rights record. The Olympic Games in Beijing are expected to attract 500,000 tourists and 4 billion television viewers. The opening ceremony is scheduled for Aug. 8.
