After laying low for a few years, Virgil has returned to rock Naptown once again. From 1996-2000, Virgil played around town with a Fugazi-meets-Quicksand style of instrumental rock before other commitments caused the band to part ways. A sort of local super group, band members have played in Devil To Pay and Birdmen of Alcatraz, just to name a couple.
This weekend, you’ll get your chance to catch them twice, and you couldn’t go wrong either way.
Friday, they’ll be playing Sam’s Saloon in Fountain Square with Bulletwolf, Lafcadio and Maravich.
Bulletwolf, a newer band to the scene, shows promise. The quartet might remind you of Motorhead or the Misfits, but it’s not because they’re trying to be fashionably retro. They sound like they grew up reading Maximum Rock ’n’ Roll instead of Revolver.
Maravich also wears their influences, except it’s in the form of a Helmet T-shirt. Jim Rawlinson, formerly of legendary Bloomington rockers Jim Fix, fronts this band. The songs Maravich have up on MySpace are ridiculously good, so check them out if you’re on the fence about this show.
If for some inexcusable reason you can’t make it out to Friday’s show, Virgil will be at what I’m calling the “Damn Near All Instrumental” Punk Rock Night at the Melody Inn. Vocal-less punk/thrash dudes You Will Die will open the show, along with the almost totally instrumental Llange, a group that will make you wonder what Pink Floyd would have sounded like if they’d recorded a metal album.
