Independent Band Collective’s Eclectic Electric
Birdy’s
Friday, March 21

Friday night’s Eclectic Electric Show at Birdy’s lived up to its name. Hosted by Indy’s Independent Band Collective, the show featured amplified indie music and eclectic art.

Bands ranged from the solo singer-songwriter Steven Cooley, who played mellow tunes on his keyboard, to the full-band folksy stylings of Amo Joy. The acoustics reverberated from the high poster-pasted ceiling.

Included in the mix were artists Emma Overman and Mike Altman, whose connection came full circle with this art/music show.

It all started when Altman invited Overman to an art fair. A band she met there, Little Voice, asked her to create an album cover.

“It’s the only time I ever did an album cover,” Overman said.

Little Voice, a band in the Collective that’s currently on hiatus, then invited Overman to participate in the Eclectic Electric show. She spread the news to Altman, and invited him to exhibit his work as well.

“Anytime I show my art, it always turns into something,” Overman said. “There’s always something good that comes out of it.”

Overman’s work is inspired by her ambition to be a children’s book illustrator. The acrylic paintings she brought to Eclectic Electric included drawings of a hunchback artist and a magician.

Overman said she enjoyed participating in the Eclectic show. “It doesn’t hurt to be connected to other bands,” she added.
