Three stars
Beef & Boards Dinner Theatre; directed by Douglas E. Stark

B&B’s West Side Story is just what people who adore this classic are expecting — no punches are pulled. It’s just a straight rendition of Bernstein and Sondheim’s retelling of the Romeo and Juliet story that pits whites against Puerto Ricans. Evy Ortiz’s Maria is sweet and restless, with an obviously classically trained soprano voice —vibrato is evident. Loren Christopher as her sweetheart, Tony, meshes well with Ortiz vocally. Numbers, both ensemble and solos, that made the show famous — “Tonight,” “America,” “I Feel Pretty,” “Gee, Officer Krupke” and more — are done exceptionally well. The stylized choreography (by Ron Morgan) that West Side Story is known for continues to show off what must be the gayest gang members in history. Through March 22; 317-872-9664.
