Performance poets will have a chance to win 50 bucks and bragging rights as Indianapolis Poetry Slam Champion next Wednesday night, Nov. 11 at the Elbow Room (605 N. Pennsylvania St.). Poets will have three minutes to perform an original piece of their own construction -- without props or musical accompaniment. The audience picks the winner. Since their inception in Chicago back in 1984, poetry slams have sprung up all over the country. Now Erin Livingston, self-proclaimed "Slam Master," plans to start a monthly slam that will also feature high caliber touring slam poets. The Nov. 11 headliner will be Jon Sands from New York City, Director of Poetry and Arts Education Programming at the Positive Health Project, a needle exchange program in Manhattan. Open sign up is at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7. It's free to watch and $5 to compete. For more details, contact indypoetryslam@gmail.com.
