Stuck-up Chicago writer: 'Indy not bad'

Thanks to the IBJ for pointing us to a Chicago Tribune article in which writer Alan Solomon almost praises Indianapolis as a travel destination. Oh, don't get us wrong, it's kind of a back-handed compliment and Solomon takes every opportunity to point out that you'd think Indianapolis would be a completely race-obsessed backwater town... but at least he doesn't use any corn-y puns. (Har har!)

I might have insulted Muncie -- and the rest of Indiana in general (in a broad stroke common in satire and commentary and, in this case, absolutely appropriate) -- but in that article there was nothing at all backhanded in my praise of Indianapolis except within Ray's curious thought process ("...race-obsessed backwater..."?). The piece was all forehand. Good town, Indy.

Alan, my man, just as your satirical commentary is totally appropriate and acceptable for your work, we like to think we have an obligation to be as negative and snarky about everything. Our readers (you know, the two or three of them) expect it. Nothing personal... in fact, personally we're pleased as punch that you like our little Naptown.

We do confess that we might have poorly-worded the phrase "race-obsessed backwater" since surely this conjures up images of racist hicks... whereas we meant to imply that you were suggesting that Indiana is mostly home to 500/NASCAR-obsessed hicks. (Please note: we're not saying that you're wrong.)
