Sen. Evan Bayh and Republican Sen. Gordon Smith of Oregon teamed up last week to ask leaders of the Senate Appropriations Committee to budget $1.8 billion for Amtrak to maintain its current rail operations and increase intercity rail services throughout the nation. The Bayh-Smith request represents a 36 percent increase over 2008. “The benefits of federal investment in intercity passenger rail have never been clearer,” wrote Bayh and Smith.
